General Dentistry is through… Basically, when you’re doing it through a hygiene department, they get you all cleaned up, see exactly what’s going on with your gum tissue and your teeth, and we get a treatment plan. And then we start seeing you, and we talk to you, and we’ll see exactly what’s going on.
Routine care is very, very important because if we can catch something small, it’s easy to fix. You know, we had patients come in and has never seen a dentist 15, 20 years, and now we got a conversation where we usually got to take all their teeth out.
So, instead of doing that, I like to see patients every six months, maybe every year, once a year, get them in here, and see exactly what’s going on so we can fix it when it’s nice and simple and easy to fix and less money.
For everybody that’s scared to death going to see the dentist, come see us. We’ll talk to you, and we’ll see exactly what’s going on. We’ll take our time. You will be in control, I will tell you that from Jump Street. If you feel anything while working, you just let me know. We stop work and see what’s going on. Take care of you.

Protect Your Smile With Our Preventive Services
You have heard that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That’s certainly true when it comes to your oral health. A good dental care routine goes a long way to keep you free from cavities and gum disease. Dr. Hawkins offers these general dental care treatments:
- Cleanings and Exam – We will remove the plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth. Doing so plays a big role in preventing tooth decay and gum disease. We will also look for signs of oral health issues to treat them as soon as possible.
- Fluoride Treatments – You can make your teeth stronger and more resistant to decay with fluoride treatments.
- Dental Sealants – Sealants create a protective barrier between your teeth and harmful bacteria.
- Bad Breath Treatment – Dr. Hawkins can address areas of concern such as halitosis (bad breath). He recommends a line of products called SmartMouth that eliminates the sulfur gases in your mouth that cause this problem.
- Gum Disease Treatment – Your gums will stay healthy with our thorough treatment.
- Nutritional Counseling – The foods you eat can boost your oral and overall health. We are happy to offer tips on how to improve your dietary habits.
- Microscope Bacteria Screening – We use advanced technology to seek “bugs” called amoebas, cytophaga, gliding/spinning rods, spirochetes, and more. They can feed on your tissue and damage your bones. Early detection can stop serious oral health concerns from developing.
- Custom Mouthguards – Custom-fitted mouthguards work better than store-bought options. We can make sports mouthguards, nightguards to prevent teeth grinding, and appliances to treat sleep apnea and prevent snoring.
Maintaining a clean, healthy mouth starts with your daily brushing and flossing regimen at home. But oral hygiene alone won’t protect your teeth and gums from tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems. General dentistry includes a wide spectrum of preventive services and treatments to keep your oral health on the right track and to detect issues with your teeth and gums at the earliest stages.
Although each general dentist office is unique, most practices offer a variety of services like dental cleanings and exams, dental X-rays, help with improving your home oral hygiene, and routine screenings for oral cancer and gum disease. Some may also offer treatment for dry mouth and bad breath, as well as nutritional counseling.
To perform a wide range of services designed to prevent, catch, and treat common dental problems, general dentists must complete the standard education and training coursework to practice dentistry. Beyond that, they can specialize in various branches of dentistry to treat more complicated oral health issues, with advanced training in areas like endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric care, and prosthodontics.
